Not only there are Indian citizens who come from different parts and corners of the country to symbiosis institutes but, there are large numbers of students from foreign countries who study in this University as well. They come mainly from south and Central Asian countries like: Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc, and some African countries like: Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia, etc. In fact, the idea behind the foundation of Symbiosis University was to strengthen the amity between people from different nations to come together and study in one place.

in order to facilitate the affaires related to foreign students, there is a council of eleven members who undertake conducting functions, meetings, electoral procedures for electing people in different places, etc. All the council members are foreign students who come from both the inside and outside of the Symbiosis excepting one member who is elected as the vice-president of the council from Indian students who stay in the symbiosis hostel. Six out of the ten remaining members are elected through an electoral procedure conducted each year in Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce. These members should be from within the Symbiosis University. The four remaining members are nominated on the recommendation of Symbiosis University Founder Director, Sir S.P.Mujumdar. These students are from outside of the Symbiosis University and they are elected after an interview taken by the Director himself from all of the candidates. For the purpose of electing the group of six members from within the Symbiosis, an election was conducted yesterday, 25th March, in Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce. There were twelve candidates from the following countries:

Approximately two thousand voters came together to vote for candidates of their choice and they were allowed to vote for six candidates (compulsory) without the right to repetition for one particular candidate. Three students were nominated for the post of vice-presidency from the Symbiosis hostel students. Only students from the hostel were allowed to vote for both the vice-president’s post and for the other candidates. Participants from outside the hostel were allowed to vote only for the twelve candidates mentioned above. There were certain conditions laid down for being eligible to vote and the most important of them was to carry the student’s ID card of his college with himself. The ID card number was typed on the computer in order to prevent a person from voting twice and his finger was painted with black colour as well. Security and the management of the election were undertaken by the members of the same council who are to give up their posts for the newly elected members. Two persons from the Symbiosis International Student’s Office were in charge of checking ID cards and typing them on the computer. This is how the election procedure was all about.
