Here is Durgapur a city with 175km distance from Kolkata; a metropolitan city and the capital of west Bengal. As thousands of Afghan students pursuing their higher educations here in India, we are a few of them living in this city and studying in different courses and colleges which are all affiliated to the University of Burdwan which has been awarded with 4 star statuses by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Actually number of Afghan students are very low and further more we are quite scattered all around, and only two Hazara students are here including me. Though we had participated in different programs, as foreign students orientation organized by the University and student day celebration held in ICCR campus but all these were held last year, and we have not been into a recent so called programs.
Well don not worry, I am not going to provide you with Bio data of each of us, but rather talk real about this state, higher education in it and the top universities here in West Bengal. First and foremost let’s have an overview about the West Bengal itself. According to the Wikipedia Information, W.B. is a state in eastern India. With Bangladesh, which lies on its eastern border, the state forms the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. To its northeast lie the states of Assam and Sikkim and the country Bhutan, and to its southwest, the state of Orissa. To the west it borders the states of Jharkhand and Bihar, and to the northwest, Nepal. The region that is now West Bengal was part of a number of empires and kingdoms during the past two millennia. The British East India Company cemented their hold on the region following the Battle of Plassey in 1757, and the city of Calcutta, now Kolkata, served for many years as the capital of British India. A hotbed of the Indian independence movement through the early 20th century, Bengal was divided in 1947 along religious lines into two separate entities, West Bengal—a state of India, and East Bengal, a part of the new nation of Pakistan. Following India's independence in 1947, West Bengal's economic and political systems were dominated for many decades by Marxism, Naxalite movements and trade unionism.
An agriculture-dependent state, West Bengal occupies only 2.7% of the India's land area, though it supports over 7.8% of the Indian population, and is the most densely populated state in India. West Bengal has been ruled by the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Front for three decades, making it the world's longest-running democratically elected communist government. Since the late 1990s, the state has seen resurgence in its economy after decades of stagnation.
Well, it was a brief note about the location and history of the state. Now let’s proceed with knowing more about education here. As mentioned earlier Kolkata the capital city of West Bengal has surely played a pioneering role in the development of modern education in India. Western models of education came to India through Calcutta. Many of the first schools and colleges were established by the missionaries and reformists. William Carey established the Serampore College, Serampore (20 km from Calcutta) in 1819. It went on to become India's first modern university in 1827 when it was incorporated by a Royal Charter as a Danish University. Although it had the charter, it was not technically a university in the modern sense of that term. And that was all about education here and now why don’t we have a look at the top universities in West Bengal but prior to that it worth mentioning to all those friends who love to pursue engineering courses, that out of 20 colleges of the NIT (National institute of Technology) all over India the only NIT College in West Bengal is right here in Durgapur the city where I currently follow my course. The list below demonstrates some of the top universities offering higher education in West Bengal.
